Awakening was the first name of this small mining camp established in 1910 on the east slope of the Slumbering Hills.  After several years of gold production, the discovery of the Jumbo mine in 1935 started a mining "boom" which even included a favorable visit by Herbert Hoover in 1936.  Renamed after the mine, Jumbo had significant production in 1941, 1948, and 1951.  The ore finally ran out, and the town is now totally abandoned.
